Is it Dangerous?

YES!

Like many hobbies/sports there is some risk involved.  It isn't really any more dangerous than things like skiing or scuba diving.  With those activities there is the risk (albeit small) of serious injury.  With combat robotics you have large metallic things that move around quickly on their own.  Most have sharp corners and some have powerful weapons.  Small robots are typically safer, but even they can be extremely dangerous.  With common sense you can avoid being a doofus and limping around like me.
Doofus Rob with injured leg During a build session of our 220 pound robot Silverback, my partner Steve and I passed the radio between us.  In the transfer the radio was bumped and the 220 pound robot ran into my leg.  Even though the robot was only a few inches away from me, it had enough momentum to cause a deep bone bruise and some severe swelling.  I was really lucky it wasn't more serious. If the robot had some room to accelerate, it would have easily crushed my leg.  As it was, I was on crutches for weeks.
